At the time "Letters to Zerky" was originally written, it was not intended to be a book, but rather a series of letters to our son Eric Xerxes Raney who was too young to remember his great adventure. In 1967, my wife and co-author JoAnne Raney took off on a lark by trying to drive a VW bus around the world with one-year-old Zerky and our little dog Tarzan. During our trip, I wrote a series of letters to Zerky while JoAnne kept a diary of our many adventures.
From the Atlantic Coast in Portugal we drove across Europe and then into Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sikkim and Assam, culminating with an unsuccessful attempt to drive the legendary Burma Road on into China. Many years later, I turned these letters into a timely and multiple prizewinning travel adventure book which has garnered rave reviews and a ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Award.
